JIJI  TOMPSON

Chief Secretary Jiji Thomson on Thursday called upon the Church to introspect on its mission. He was delivering the keynote address on the mission of the Church at the valedictory function of the bicentenary celebrations of the Kottayam Orthodox Theological Seminary (Old seminary) here.

He also called for taking up the mission of spreading Christianity and added it was Biblically imperative to bring people unto Jesus.

Thomson, who spoke at a function being attended by Governor Justice P Sathasivam, highlighted the importance of the evangelisation mission.

Thomson began his speech by saying that he was speaking not as a Chief Secretary, but as a son of the Church.

“The ultimate mission of the Church is to spread Christianity and I am thinking of ways to fulfil this mission. There are three ways to achieve this goal, which are Church evangelisation, personal evangelisation and mass evangelisation. While mass evangelisation is being held through Bible conventions, everyone can go on the path of personal evangelisation,” he said, elaborating the term gospel as ‘go’ and ‘spell.’

When Express contacted Thomson over phone and asked whether his speech amounted to evangelisation, he said being a Christian he had the right to speak about Christianity. Replying to a question whether it is proper for him to speak about attracting people to Christianity while holding the Chief Secretary’s post, he said everyone has religious freedom and he could speak about it as a person.

“There is nothing wrong in speaking about Christianity while being a Chief Secretary,” he said.

Prominent Sunni Muslim leader Kanthapuram AP Aboobacker Musliar on Saturday said the concept of gender equality is un-Islamic.

Musliar, the chief of All India Sunni Jamiyyathul Ulama, said women have no mental strength and the power to control the universe, "which lies in the hands of men."

"Gender equality is something which is never going to be a reality. It is against Islam, humanity and was intellectually wrong," he said while speaking at a camp of Muslim Students Federation (MSF) in Kozhikode, PTI reported.

"Women can never equal men. They are fit only to deliver children. Women cannot withstand crisis situations," he said.
He wondered if there was even a single woman among thousands of cardiac surgeons.

The 76-year-old Islamic scholars remarks against reservation for women in elections had set off another controversy recently.

He had said 50 per cent reservation of seats for women in civic polls was "too high" but retracted the statement later when it became controversial.

Referring to the ongoing debates over allowing girls and boys to share seats in colleges, Musliar said it was "part of a calculated move to destroy Islam and culture."

He also rubbished recent allegations regarding sexual exploitations at Madrasas and asked those who raised allegations to bring evidence to prove it.

A controversy had erupted recently after a woman journalist wrote an account on her Facebook wall about the alleged sexual abuse of young boys and girls in Madrasas.

The latest entry to it is a hoarding of Tamil Nadu CM J Jayalalithaa doing a Sivagami from the blockbuster Baahubali where she is seen holding a baby above rapids.

The poster says, "Amma single-handedly saved Chennai city and stranded people from the disaster" referring to the present Chennai floods. The billboard put up by S Muthukarappan, an MLA from Thirunelveli (far way from Chennai and not affected by the torrential rains), is now doing rounds on social media and is being strongly criticised.

Do you think Jayalalithaa did all what she could to save the people of Chennai?
