HATHA YOGA - AN AID TO MIND-CONTROL : In addition to these positive methods of overcoming the mind, you may also know that the mind is played upon by the three inner vibratory states, or movements, called (in Yogic terminology) Gunas - meaning qualities. They are Sattva, Rajas and Tamas. Sattva implies purity and light. Rajas implies passion and activity. Tamas implies inertia, darkness and grossness. Purity tends to steady the mind and make it go inward, whereas passion and impurity throw the mind into a state of unsteadiness and turmoil and take it outward, away from its center. The mind which is rendered Sattvic is beautifully balanced. Purity of life, in all its departments, is thus a great requisite for the refinement of the nature and the heightening of the being.  To enhance the steadiness of the mind, the practice of certain Yogic postures is useful and beneficial, because there is an inter-connection between the body and the mind. Hatha Yoga is here recommended as a

THE RAJA YOGA TECHNIQUE OF SELECTIVE THINKING  : Patanjali, the expounder of the most complete science of mind-control, has said that if you want to get rid of any particular thought, then you should instantly raise a counter-thought of the opposite nature. If, for instance, you have a certain negative thought of fear, then introduce a positive thought of courage. If you have a negative thought of hatred and hostility, create immediately in your mind a positive thought of love, friendship and brotherhood. Fill yourself with the feeling of cordiality. If you are overcome by a thought of prejudice and intolerance, raise thoughts and feelings of sympathy, understanding and oneness. This can be done at any specific instant, with reference to any specific negative thought. This practice can also be undertaken as a complete course of psychological self-transformation with the technique systematically practiced day by day. It is an invaluable inner discipline for your ethical unfo

HOW TO TRANSCEND THE MIND : continued Mind, as thought, is not overpowering. Mind, as "I", is also not overpowering, because it has no dynamism in it; it is just a habitual mode of the mind. But, when desires are evolved out of the "I" and "mine" thoughts, and when imagination is brought into play the mischief starts. It is letting the imagination play upon your thoughts that gives them a dynamism of their own. The more a thought is dwelt upon, the more quickly it grows into the dynamic form of a desire. Therefore, the moment that a thought appears, stamp it out. The Hindus say that great forest fires can be averted if you stamp upon the tiny sparks right at the beginning. Supposing the thought does not reach the condition of a desire, still you must try to remember that it is not YOU. Do not couple yourself with it. Do not get involved in it. Do not identify yourself with it. Know yourself to be apart from the thought and do not fulfill it.

HOW TO TRANSCEND THE MIND : You must be able to thus perceive all the modes of your entire personality. You are the silent, unattached Witness-Consciousness within. You are not the senses; you are not the mind; you are not the thought, emotion or sentiment. You are beyond even the intellect, which is deluded and overcome by this illusion of false identification. Thus, what you have to work up to, ultimately, is that you are not even this "I" thought which is dearest to you, and to which you are clinging. Even this "I" thought is merely a mode of the mind, like any other thought. The true "I" (the real YOU within) is a supramental factor. You are a pure Being distinct from this "I" idea which the mind habitually thinks. Transcend the mind. You are pure Consciousness and your true identity is "Conscious Being". You are the true "Thinker" of the "I" thought and you make use of the mind to express yourself.

Happy Navaratri :

Ratri means "night" and Nava means "nine".  During Navaratri, Ishvara, in the form of Devi is worshiped as Durgā, Lakśmi and Saraswati. Day 1, 2, 3 - Durga Ma Day 4, 5, 6- Lakshmi Ma Day 7, 8, 9 - Saraswati Ma  First we invoke Durga Mata ji to wipe away all our ailments, troubles, inhibitions, and make way for better things to come, by removing all our obstacles that stagnate our emotional, intellectual and physical growth Next, let Lakśmi Mata ji be invoked, to give us health, and wealth to enrich our minds and lives with all things good, and to make our endeavors successful.  and finally, Saraswati Mata ji, to give us wisdom, and knowledge. These are two of the most precious possessions. Wisdom is that discriminative tool which which allows us to differentiate between right and wrong, eternal and non eternal, and exercise perfect control over the mind and bodily actions, thus protecting us from inner and outer elements.  The tenth day is

Why Do Sadhana? God-Realisation Has a Price : In this world, everything has got a price-tag attached to it. If you want something, you must be willing to pay the price for it. You cannot get something for nothing. It is against the Law. If you say, "I can steal, I can rob", even there, you must be willing to pay the price of robbery, the risk of arrest and punishment. They say that in Malaysia, if you want to marry a Malaysian Muslim girl—and they have a reputation for their looks—and if you happen to be a Hindu or a Christian or a Buddhist, you must first get converted to the Muslim faith before you can marry her. Under the Malaysian law, this is necessary. In other words, you can get your girl if you can pay the price of your religion. It is an old tale how King Edward VIII of England gave up his throne to marry his commoner wife. It is recent history that the people of Bangladesh obtained their political freedom with the blood of thousands of martyrs, w

The Excuse of Difficulty :

Refusal to do Sadhana on the score that it is difficult is just making a lame excuse. The loser is the person who refuses. It betrays a lack of will. It betrays a total lack of appreciation of the wholesome and immense benefits which flow from Sadhana. Nothing is difficult. "The word impossible is not in my dictionary" said Napoleon. "What one fool can do, another can" says an anonymous proverb printed in the students’ calendar of a Madras college. Where there is a will, there is a way. Is not life itself difficult? And what does life yield for all the worldly effort? Misery. And what does Sadhana yield? Health and peace. What does sustained spiritual effort yield? God. Yes, Sadhana is difficult, but practise you must. You cannot write sugar on a piece of paper and lick it. Don’t you struggle to keep your health? To earn money? To win your girl? You are not ashamed to say, "Yes, sir. No, sir" in the office. You go to the airport to receive

Savasana : "Sava" means ‘dead body.’ When one performs this Asana, it gives the appearance of a dead body. So it is named Savasana. This is a closing pose. You will have to do this after doing all the exercises. Technique : Spread a soft blanket and lie supine (on the back). Keep the hand on the ground by the sides. Let the legs be straight. Keep the heels together and the toes separated. Close your eyes. Now relax all the muscles of the body. Breathe slowly and rhythmically. Forget all your bubbling emotions and direct all your thoughts internally. Relax all muscles, nerves and organs. Start the relaxation process from the toes. Then proceed to the calf muscles, gastronemius, solens and plantaris muscles, muscles of the neck, face, etc. See that the abdominal organs, heart, chest, brain are also relaxed. Have an order. Do not sleep. In this pose you will enjoy perfect peace, ease, comfort and relaxation. You will have to experience beneficial results of this

Introduction Life has become very complex in these days. The struggle for existence is very acute and keen. There is very keen competition in every walk of life. The bread problem has become very difficult to be solved. There is unemployment everywhere. Even brilliant young men with extraordinary qualification and recommendations hardly get job in these days. Therefore, a great deal of continuous mental and physical strain is imposed on modern humanity by its deadening daily work and unhealthy mode of life. Action produces movement; movement causes habits. Man has acquired many artificial habits. He has allowed nature’s original habits to lapse. He has brought tension in many muscles and nerves through incorrect habit-positions. He has forgotten the first principles of relaxation. He will have to learn lessons from the cat, dog and the infant in the Science of Relaxation. If you practise relaxation, no energy will be wasted. You will be very active, and energetic. Durin

HAPPINESS :

Image
"At the doors of large granaries are placed traps containing fried rice (Moori) to catch mice. The mice, attracted by the flavour of the fried rice, forgets the more solid pleasure of tasting the rice inside the granary, and fall into the trap. They are caught therein and killed. Just so is the case with the soul. It stands on the threshold of Divine bliss, which is like millions of the highest worldly pleasures solidified into one; but instead of striving for that bliss, it allows itself to be enticed by the petty pleasures of the world and falls into the trap of Maya, the great illusion, and dies therein". - Sri Ramakrishna Paramahamsa. INTRODUCTION : Man wants happiness. He shuns pain. He moves heaven and earth to get the happiness he wants from sensual objects, and lo, gets himself entangled in the extricable meshes of Maya. Poor man! He does not know that these objects are perishable and evanescent, finite and conditioned in time, space, and causation. And

The Mind in Dream :

Image
The mind is ever rotating like a wheel. It plays with the five senses of perception and gets experiences in the waking state. It receives the different sense impressions through the avenue of the senses. The impressions are lodged in the causal body. Ajnana or the causal body is like a black sheet of cloth. In it are contained the Samskaras of all your previous births. During dream, the mind creates various kinds of objects out of the impressions produced by the experience of the waking state. Sometimes, the experiences of the previous births which are lodged in the causal body flash out during the dreaming state. The mind is the perceiver and the mind itself is the perceived in dream. The dream objects are not independent of the mind. They have no separate existence apart from the mind. So long as the dream lasts, the dream creatures will remain, just as the milkman remains so long as the milking goes on. Whereas, in the Jagrat state, the object exists independent of the m
