2. Kerala Sunni leader Kanthapuram AP Aboobacker Musalyar has controversially described the concept of gender equality as being “un-Islamic” and said that women could never equal men as “they are fit only to deliver children”.

3. Musaliar, the chief of All India Sunni Jamiyyathul Ulama, said on Saturday that women do not have mental strength and do not possess the power to control the universe, “which lies in the hands of men.”

4. “Gender equality is something which is never going to be a reality. It is against Islam, humanity and was intellectually wrong,” he said while speaking at a camp of Muslim Students Federation (MSF) in Kozhikode.

5. “Women can never equal men. They are fit only to deliver children. Women cannot withstand crisis situations,” he said.

1. Kanthapuram had several occasions expressed highly conservative opinion about women's liberties.

2. He had supported lowering the minimum legal age for marriage for Muslim women under Indian law.

3. A group of Muslim women burned his effigy for his comments in support of reducing the legal marriage age for Muslim women. .

4. In a recent interview given to Mathrubhumi Weekly, Kanthapuram defended polygamy and argued that 'women should travel only if it was unavoidable.

5.  Even then, these journeys must be for purposes ratified by Islam.

Moreover, women lacks the strength and guts,” said Kanthapuram, who asked whether there was any lady doctor who dared to conduct a heart surgery.

5. Kanthapuram also rejected the allegations that sexual harassment took place in madrasas. He said those who make allegations should present evidence.

Eminent Sunni Muslim leader Kanthapuram Aboobacker Musliyar, known for his misogynist remarks, has referred to gender equality as “impractical”, making a reference to women as knowing “only to deliver babies” and stating that “demand for gender equality was targeted at destroying Islam and its culture.”

Women should be accompanied by father, brother or husband on their travels, or be in the company of women only. They need to make trips only for religious purposes. Education is imparted women because the times demand it, which will have no effect on religious laws binding on women.”

Claiming that women do not have “courage”, Musliyar asked if there is a woman doctor who can perform a major surgery.

17. “Women doctors can do general medicine or manage pediatrics. But they don’t have the courage for big surgical interventions,’’ he said.

18. Referring to a recent controversy over segregation of girls and boys in a Muslim-run college, the orthodox Muslim leader said the demand that girls and boys be allowed to sit together was meant to destroy Islam.

19. He said that the allegation of a Muslim woman journalist that children used to be sexually abused at madrasas was baseless, and added that those who raise the allegation should bring forth evidence.
Musliyar has a history of making controversial observations over women issues and their role in society.

20. He had recently come out against women reservation in local governing bodies. He had also advocated marriage of minor girls to ensure morality and discipline in society.
